Concrete driveways in Craigieburn
Replacing or extending concrete driveways in Craigieburn 3064: removing old slabs, widening a Hume crossover, keying into existing concrete and typical prices.
Craigieburn is the established neighbour in the 3064 postcode. It is in Hume City Council like Kalkallo and Mickleham, but many of its homes are old enough that the driveway question is about replacing, widening or resurfacing concrete rather than pouring a first slab. Hume’s population forecast, prepared by .id, puts Craigieburn at 71,297 residents in 2026, rising to 80,078 by 2046. Through this site a Craigieburn enquiry goes to an independent concreter, who is the one to inspect, quote and do the replacement.
Older estates, older concrete
Stockland’s Highlands community in Craigieburn has more than two decades of residents behind it, according to the developer. Concrete laid twenty or more years ago can show settled panels, cracks along tree roots, lifted joints at the garage and stains that will not clean off. The CCAA data sheet on residential driveways and paths explains two common causes: trees drawing moisture from clay soils so the ground shrinks under the slab, and roots finding their way under the pavement and lifting sections.
Repair, resurface or replace?
| Problem | Usual approach | Price guide (Melbourne) |
|---|---|---|
| Stains and worn surface, slab sound | Clean and reseal, or a spray-on coating | Ask for a measured quote |
| A few cracked or sunken panels | Saw cut and replace those panels | $79 to $160 per square metre for new concrete plus removal |
| Widespread cracking, poor base | Break out and replace the whole driveway | $32 to $105 per square metre to remove, then new concrete |
| Want a new look | Replace in exposed aggregate or coloured concrete | $125 to $210 per square metre or $100 to $210 per square metre |
The removal and new concrete ranges come from a Melbourne guide verified in October 2026. A resurfacing coating does not fix movement in the base; if panels have dropped or rocked, the concreter should say so before selling a coating. The concrete driveway cost guide explains removal, disposal and base repair costs.
Widening or moving a crossover in Hume
Widening for a second car or a trailer is a common reason to rework a crossover. Hume’s driveways and crossovers page says council consent is needed to construct, alter or remove a crossing, and consent is also needed to change access. Hume’s consent form, current from July 2026, adds specific conditions for older streets:
- An extension to an existing crossing must have the old return and footpath saw cut, with the new work keyed into the old concrete, and dowel joints used.
- If a crossing is moved, the old one must be removed and the kerb and channel replaced at the owner’s expense.
- Residential crossings run between 3.0 and 3.7 metres across; council allows more only when there is no other way in without crossing the nature strip. Hume’s siting policy separately caps a crossing for an approved double garage at 6 metres, so ask council which limit it will apply to your widening.
- Only one crossing per allotment unless council allows otherwise; the siting policy lists exceptions such as corner blocks and frontages over 18 m.
Hume’s form notes that applications can be lodged at council’s customer service centres in Broadmeadows, Sunbury and Craigieburn. The vehicle crossing guide has the remaining rules and the inspection step.
Street trees in established streets
Where a street tree stands near your crossover, it limits the options. Hume’s siting policy says no crossing may be less than 2 metres from an existing street tree, and any removal or relocation of a tree, pole or pit needs the relevant authority’s written approval at the applicant’s cost. Plan the new driveway line around the tree, not the other way round.
Matching new and old concrete
Concrete colour changes as it ages, so a new panel beside an old one will look different for some time, even with the same mix. If the driveway joins an existing path or porch, decide whether to replace the lot or accept the contrast. Paths are covered in coloured and plain concrete paths, and full replacements in plain and coloured concrete driveways.
Nearby suburbs
Mickleham and Kalkallo are the newer Hume suburbs nearby, where a first driveway is the more usual request.
Before you ask for a Craigieburn quote
Photograph the whole driveway from the street and from the garage, close ups of the worst cracks, and any tree near the crossover. Say whether you want to keep, widen or move the crossing. Then request a Craigieburn driveway quote.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I widen my existing Craigieburn crossover?
Possibly. You need Hume's consent. Hume's form requires the old return and footpath to be saw cut and the new concrete keyed in with dowels, and widths above 3.7 metres are allowed only in limited cases.
- Should I resurface or replace my old driveway?
Resurfacing suits a slab that is sound but stained or worn. If panels have sunk, rocked or cracked across, the base has moved and replacement is the lasting fix.
- What does removing an old driveway involve?
Breaking out the concrete, loading and carting it away, then checking and repairing the base. The Melbourne guide prices stand-alone removal separately from new concrete.
- Can I add a second crossing in Craigieburn?
Hume generally allows one crossing per lot, with exceptions such as corner blocks or frontages wider than 18 metres. Any second crossing needs council approval.
