Concrete driveways in Kalkallo
Driveway, path and slab concreting in Kalkallo 3064: Cloverton blocks, Hume crossover consent, volcanic plains ground and what to send for a quote.
Kalkallo is the suburb this site is named for, and much of its housing is new. The suburb sits in Hume City Council, with Beveridge to the north, and Hume’s population forecast, prepared by .id, puts Kalkallo at 11,748 people in 2026, growing to 18,095 by 2046. Enquiries made here are handed to an independent local concreter; this website is run by Yes Right Pty Ltd as a referral service and does not do building work.
A suburb built mostly in the last decade
Kalkallo began as a small township serving travellers on the highway north. The 2012 Lockerbie planning report records land sales in the Parish of Kalkallo from 1840, and a developing township by the 1860s. The modern suburb is different. Stockland’s Cloverton estate, which its developer describes as spread across Kalkallo and Beveridge and calls Victoria’s largest masterplanned community, accounts for much of the new housing. The Lockerbie precinct plan that guides it was approved by the Minister for Planning and gazetted on 28 June 2012, according to the Victorian Planning Authority.
For a concreter that means three typical jobs:
- First driveways on blocks handed over with no finished driveway. See plain and coloured concrete driveways and the exposed aggregate guide.
- Side paths and bin pads squeezed between the house and the fence, covered in concrete paths.
- Backyard slabs for an outdoor table or a garden shed, covered in alfresco and shed slabs.
Hume’s crossover rules apply here
The concrete between your boundary and the kerb belongs to the road reserve. Hume City Council says on its driveways and crossovers page that a crossing cannot be built, altered or removed without its consent. Hume’s siting policy excludes crossings on subdivision roads not yet handed over to council, so on a brand new street ask both the developer and Hume which of them approves the crossing. If your crossing is already there, check it is undamaged and at the width you need before the driveway is poured to meet it.
Hume’s consent form sets a residential crossing width of 3.0 m to 3.7 m, asks for plain concrete where a footpath exists, and needs 24 hours notice for a pre-pour inspection. The vehicle crossing guide lists the rest.
Ground and drainage on the volcanic plains
The Lockerbie background report places the precinct in the Victorian Volcanic Plains bioregion and notes stony knolls, the Merri Creek corridor and the Kalkallo Common grassland reserve. What matters for a slab is what sits under your topsoil after the builder’s site cut. A concreter should dig a test hole or two before pricing the base, and ask for your house’s soil report if you have it. The CCAA guide on residential driveways and paths recommends removing all topsoil and any soft or saturated patches, and adding a non-expansive sub-base on highly expansive clay.
Drainage is the other local issue. On a new block the levels and stormwater pits were set by the builder. A driveway or side path that blocks that path can send water against the house. The BPC’s landscaping page says driveways and paving can interfere with drainage, and suggests asking your council or water authority about local requirements.
Estate rules and timing
Some land contracts on new estates include design guidelines that cover driveway finishes, colours and when the front landscaping must be done. Read yours before choosing a finish, and keep any approval letter with your paperwork. If an estate team must sign off on the driveway colour, give the concreter the approved colour code at quote time.
Weather affects timing too. The CCAA guidance says concrete should not be placed above 30 degrees air temperature without precautions, so a pour planned for a hot week may move to an early start or a cooler day.
What does concreting cost in Kalkallo?
Kalkallo jobs are priced the same way as anywhere in Melbourne’s north: by area, finish, base preparation and access. A Melbourne cost guide lists plain concrete at $79 to $160 per square metre and exposed aggregate at $125 to $210 per square metre. The Kalkallo concrete driveway cost guide shows the full table and explains what usually adds to a quote.

Concreters who take Kalkallo jobs may also cover the wider corridor. Read the local notes for Mickleham, Donnybrook, Beveridge and Craigieburn; the last three sit in different council areas or have older housing, which changes the permit and preparation steps.
What to send with a Kalkallo enquiry
- Your street and whether you are in Cloverton or the older township area.
- The rough size of each area: driveway, paths, patio, shed slab.
- Photos of the frontage, the garage, the side passages and any pits.
- Whether the council crossover is built and in good condition.
- Your preferred finish and any colour rules from the estate.
When you have those, start a Kalkallo concreting enquiry.
Frequently asked questions
- Which council covers Kalkallo?
Hume City Council. Crossover consent and fees go through Hume, and its Technical Services team inspects the base before the concrete is poured.
- Is Cloverton in Kalkallo?
Stockland describes Cloverton as located across Kalkallo and Beveridge. Homes on the Beveridge side may fall under a different council, so check your rates notice.
- When should I plan my driveway after handover?
Check your land contract for any estate design guidelines with a deadline for front landscaping or driveways. Booking a concreter early also gives time for any crossover consent if the crossing needs changes.
- Can I do the driveway and backyard slab in one visit?
Often yes. Pouring several areas from the same delivery can reduce fixed costs. Ask the provider to price each area separately and as a combined job.
